The Bike Park

This weekend Nick and I broke ground on our top secret bike park. The first day was spent mostly mapping out the terrain and deciding how the park would flow. We managed to come up with a pretty effective way to build solid ladder bridges quickly and easily. The first feature is in and rides beautifully, now our minds are spinning with ideas on where we can take this! Enjoy the quick video from build day 1.

As a college freshman in Intro to Psychology I was introduced to the concept of hindsight bias, a term for the outcome of an event seeming more obvious after it took place then it did initially. Today in making my typical rounds on the internet, I am again exposed to a perfect example of hindsight bias that would make any skier blush. The video below is something so obvious and so awesome that now in hindsight I can not believe I have not seen it before. It’s awesome, it’s rad, of course it works and it’s make me just a little upset I didn’t do it first.

Paul Mitchell World Series of Moguls, Vail, CO, 1995: This was Shane McConkey’s coming out. Earlier in the day, he was banned from the competition for throwing a backﬂip, so he convinced a patroller to let him go back to the start to get his bag. Instead of picking up his things, he took off all his clothes, did a spread eagle, and was once again banned from Vail.

Freeskier had a cool article on Shane McConkey through the years. Can you imagine hitting the bumps completely nude and throwing a giant spread eagle like that?

Hermininator Hangs It Up

Hermann Maier decided to end his ski racing career today after a knee injury last season, and subsequent surgery prompted him to make a long term health decision. Maier entered the ski racing world at age 23 in 1996 and has won four Olympic medals (two Gold) and six world championship medals (three Gold). Maier was an amazing skier, but most probably remember him from “the” crash in Nagano which he walked away from to return two days later and snag his first Gold.

Switchskier 2.0, or 3.0, maybe 4.0?

Welcome to yet another revision on the Switchskier site, if you’ve been with Switchskier for a while you have probably seen the site go thru many many revisions and upgrades, and I don’t intend to stop tweeking and playing. Switchskier has come a long way from a linux script that created a simple photo album on a server I built stashed away in a closet, using a crap .co.nr free domain name. With this revision, Switchskier marks its transformation into a “real” website, we now have a real server and domain (no more down time if my house lost power last night and the dynamic dns hasn’t updated yet). I have decided to option wordpress for the platform for it’s ease of use and easy theme-ability. There is a new twitter feed on the top right that will show short update snippets, a tag cloud for easy post navigation, and by using wordpress, I can take advantage of the really cool iPhone app to update this site where ever I am. The content really will not change much, and I will continue to post just about anything I feel is cool enough to share with my friends. The biggest improvement that wordpress brings to Switchskier is definitely the comments, so please feel free to comment away, and thanks for taking a look at the new site!

Heil Valley Ranch MTB Ride

Danny brought his Flip Mino along on our Thursday evening ride at Heil Valley. Fun ride, really rocky, rain made it cool!
